Workshop on the Documentation and Study of the History of the Greek Journalism

The aim of ETMIET is to document the multi-faceted history of the Greek Press from the late-18th century to the present day and to correlate it with other national histories of the Press, as found in the relevant literature.
Within this context, ETMIET has undertaken the task of creating a database of Greek Journalism, both in Greece and abroad, which will include newspapers and magazines, a register of Greek-speaking journalists, publishers and individual participants the production, distribution and consumption of journalism in Greece and abroad, and archives containing relevant bibliographies, oral testimonies, personal archives and publications, as well as audiovisual material.
In addition, the Workshop seeks to:
• organise research groups for the purpose of in-depth thematic analysis based on an interdisciplinary approach.
• collaborate with professional press and media organizations and related academic and research institutions in Greece and abroad.
• organise scholarly discussions and seminars
• publish research findings. In collaboration with Papazisis Publishers, the Unit has inaugurated a series under the title of “History of the Greek Press: Documents, Testimonies and Studies”. As part of this series, we published (2006) a book in Greek by Babis Marketos – owner-publisher-editor of the Greek-American newspaper The National Herald/Ethnikos Keryx (New York, 1915 to present) – entitled Greek-Americans:History of the Greek Diaspora in America.
Members of the ETMIET Academic Board comprise distinguished academics and researchers from university institutions and research centres in the UK, France, Germany, Cyprus and Australia.
The History of Greek Journalism
The basic objective of ETMIET is to establish a synthetic historiography of Greek journalism from the late-18th century to the present day, and to conduct comparative studies in relation to other national press histories.
To this end, ETMIET has established an electronic database, entitled Mapping the History of Greek Journalism. An Online Archive of Testimonies, Practices and Skills.
The database Mapping the History of Greek Journalism is based on three main pillars:
· an Archive of the Periodical Press
· an Archive of the Daily Press
· an Archive of Broadcast Journalism
Connecting the three Archives is essential for the better understanding and mapping of the human geography of Greek journalism and its historical development. In order to facilitate such a connection the Register of Greek-speaking Journalists, Publishers, and People of the Press in Greece and Abroad will form a fundamental part of the database.
In support of the above, an electronic Annotated Bibliography is being compiled.

The Archive of the Periodical Press is being established in cooperation with the Union of Journalists of Periodical & Electronic Press (ESPIT) under a terms of a research project on the history of the Greek Periodical Press, which includes the Popular Magazines in Greece (1900 to the present day): Critical Study, Quantitative Data, Basic Theoretical Guidelines, Research Challenges
